Creating an engaging and safe environment for children's church is crucial for their development and connection with God. The investment, be it time or money, helps to shape the future generations of not only our churches but our communities.

Joyful Worship: Kid-Friendly Musical Instruments
As we are invested in the spiritual growth of our youngest members, we understand the importance of making worship a joyous experience. Introducing kid-friendly musical instruments, such as shakers, tambourines, and hand drums, can transform the atmosphere of your children's church. These instruments not only engage the children actively but also contribute to the overall energy and enthusiasm during worship sessions.

One of the most successful and memorable lessons that I can recall is in the lesson of marching around the walls of Jericho. The Sunday School teachers and I built a small fort of out various boxes in the center of the classroom. Then, we gave the children a choice of one of these fun classroom instruments. They marched, they sang, they played; and when the walls came down, the entire class cheered. Was it loud and noisy? Absolutely. Was it worth it? Try for yourself, and tell me!
Interactive Learning: Vibrant Bible Story Books
Capturing the attention of young minds during Bible study can be a delightful challenge. In working with our young teens, I quickly realized I was fighting a losing battle. I was up against cell phones, video games, YouTube; you name it. After MANY different attempts, we finally found the winner. "The Action Bible" struck a chord with many of our young kids, and opened up the doorway for a closer relationship with God's Word.
Invest in vibrant Bible storybooks that feature engaging narratives and colorful illustrations. These books not only make the stories come alive but also foster a love for the Bible in the hearts of the children. By creating an interactive and visually stimulating learning environment, we lay the foundation for a lifelong connection with God's Word.
Safety First: Child-Friendly First Aid Kit
No matter the size or location of your church, you probably have a Joey. Joey is the child who, no matter what, can find a way to get into something and get hurt. A scraped knee, a cut finger; there is ALWAYS a need for a band aid. And I know this seems silly to mention in this blog, but you would be surprised at how many Childrens Church Departments overlook this simple step.
Ensuring the safety of our young attendees is paramount. Equip your children's church space with a child-friendly first aid kit. These kits are specifically designed to cater to the medical needs of children and include basic supplies such as bandages, antiseptic wipes, and child-sized band-aids. Proactively addressing minor injuries ensures that the children feel secure in their church environment.
Creative Expression: Art Supplies for Bible Crafts
If you have taught children for a little while, you probably have had a visitor or new child come in who seemed was reluctant to join the other children. They didn't want to sing or play with the kids, and would resist other attempts to be added to the group. The secret to overcoming that? Get them doing an arts and craft project as quickly as possible! Once the work begins, PRAISE the child's work to the rest of the class. A smile is soon to follow, and the next think you know, they will be running with the rest of the class.

Encourage creativity and self-expression by providing a variety of art supplies for Bible crafts. Colored paper, glue, markers, and stickers can be powerful tools for illustrating biblical stories and concepts. Engaging in hands-on activities enhances the learning experience and allows children to express their understanding of the teachings in a fun and creative way.
Comfort and Connection: Cozy Kids' Seating
Creating a comfortable and inviting atmosphere is crucial for fostering a sense of connection among children. Invest in cozy seating options that are suitable for various activities, including storytime and group discussions. Comfortable seating not only enhances the overall experience but also makes the church environment feel more welcoming and inclusive.
Our Sunday School Superintendent went through MANY different seating options until she found what I can refer to as a "game changer". Walking into the classroom, I found all the tables lowered, and a stack of these amazing childrens floor cushions in the corner. They have become part of the lesson, parts of games, and a source of great pride and enjoyment with the children in our class. In truth, I do not recall HOW we were able to survive without them!
Engaging Lessons: Interactive Whiteboard or Smart TV
Allow me to acknowledge right up front that this may be a bit more of an investment than most churches are able to make in their Sunday School department. I understand the financial burden this particular item brings. However; if we are to compete in the scope and reach that traditional schools provide our children, we have to use the same tools. Otherwise, we seem outdated, outclass, and often forgotten.
Bring technology into your children's church with an interactive whiteboard or smart TV. We have had amazing success with this more affordable whiteboard from JAV. Displaying visual aids and interactive lessons can captivate the children's attention and enhance the learning experience. Utilize educational apps, videos, and interactive software to make lessons more engaging and memorable.
Safety and Security: Childproofing Supplies
Prioritize the safety of your young attendees by childproofing your children's church space. Childproofing supplies such as outlet covers, corner guards, and cabinet locks help create a secure environment. Taking these precautions not only ensures the physical safety of the children but also provides peace of mind for parents and guardians.
Tech-Assisted Worship: Kid-Friendly Worship Music
Enhance the worship experience by incorporating age-appropriate worship music. Invest in worship music CDs or create digital playlists featuring uplifting and engaging songs. Even though my own children are all grown, they can still immediately recall and sing along with our friends The VeggieTales. Technology can be a powerful tool for connecting with children, and incorporating it into worship can make the experience more enjoyable and relatable.
Storytelling Magic: Portable Puppet Theater
Transform storytelling into a magical experience with a portable puppet theater. Hand puppets and a portable stage add a dynamic and interactive element to the narrative. Children are naturally drawn to stories told through puppets, making it an effective and entertaining way to convey biblical lessons.

We have had amazing success with puppets, and have incorporated them in a number of ways. Along with traditional Sunday School lessons, we have had special puppet events for Halloween and Valentine's Day, and even used a puppet as the emcee during our Easter service. The children's connection to the puppets allowed them to fell more a part of and engaged in the larger services.
Team Unity: Matching Team T-Shirts or Aprons
Foster a sense of unity among your children's church team by wearing matching team T-shirts or aprons. Creating a visual identity not only strengthens the bond among team members but also presents a unified and welcoming image to the children and their families. This simple yet impactful addition contributes to the overall positive atmosphere of your children's ministry.
